Samuel Coskey: The many faces of E_0

Monday, September 10, 2012, from 10:30 to 11:45am
Room MP 210

Speaker: Samuel Coskey (Boise State)

Title: The many faces of E_0

E_0 is the “almost equality” equivalence relation on the space 2^N of infinite binary sequences. Simple as it sounds, it appears in numerous places in mathematics. In this talk I’ll mention just a few examples: a fun game, measure theory, and group classification. These examples all have something to do with set theory, so I’ll discuss that connection a little further. The talk should be elementary, easy to follow, and at least in part, fun.
