Title:”Meandering through a century of compact groups”.
Abstract:
Our goal is to understand the structure of groups with continuity by expressingthem in terms of groups we know very well.
To achieve this, we enjoy thefragrance of flowers planted by Leon Battista Alberti, Filippo Brunelleschi,
Per Enflo, Andrew Gleason, David Hilbert, Karl Heinrich Hofmann,
Kenkichi  Iwasawa, Felix Klein,Sophus Lie, Hermann Minkowski,Deane Montgomery,
Lev Semenovich Pontryagin,Terry Tao, Egbert van Kampen,
John von Neumann, Hidehiko Yamabe and Leo Zippin.
This is suitable for a general mathematical audience.
